Although a few days late, the Tekken Zaibatsu Forum has reached its 20th Anniversary

You'll also see some of the early registrants also hit that 20 year mark. It's an amazing accomplishment despite the current state of the forum. I wanna say the official launch date was January 5th, but the first big wave of people registering occurred on January 6th, 2000. Earliest registered user is of course Castel, who signed up on January 3rd. I'm assuming he was testing the forum before exposing it to the public.

After logging in, I noticed that there are 300+ viewers online; all guests except myself. So at least people are on the site.

Happy Anniversary!

Happy anniversary TZ!

Forums, as a medium, are unfortunately a relic of the past. I guess some people are poking around the T7 forums looking for guides and so on.

This is true.

I remember when the forums were launched. They provided a great alternative to the TTT.com forums that were around for a number of months. Even though the TTT.com forums was a tightly knit community, Zaibatsu was far more robust, and provided a lot more options. January 6th is pretty much when the majority made the jump.

Plus, it doesn't help that at some point, Tekken 4 was going to be released...I'm sure Namco could've migrated the forum to a more universal domain to prevent the TTT.com forums from being dated on future game releases. But once Zaibatsu came up with that forum, the writing was on the wall. Props to Jason Arney for keeping up with all of the nonsense and spam that came with holding that together.

The forums was also the birth of a lot of tournaments that were either created or became mainstream. Sushi, who I like to call Stephiroth, started her Extravaganza series, Tournament in Texas was heavily featured, and Final Round were the big ones and kickstarted a lot of communities which still holds today.

I also took interest in a gathering of many players across the midwestern region, which was eventually announced in the form of a tournament. I wish I had the database to find out, but I want to say that The Mayn Event was the first official tournament announced on this forum. That brought out a lot of old school names that people may know today. It wasn't the eSports that became the standard nowadays, but it was great times.

I would say around 2010 and 2015 were the years where the forum took a significant drop; particularly with the rise of YouTube and social media avenues. The good part is Tekken 7 is doing very well for itself and has one of the better initial lifespans as far as longevity. So the forum has seen better days, but the Zaibatsu in general continues to be an avenue for people who want to resource the game and history.

Why is that? I've tried using the discord but that doesn't seem like a replacement for the forum. The forum has it's own sections to discuss specific topics that stay visible in their own section.

Sad to see the forum so dead when Tekken 7 is doing so well.

Unfortunately, tons of resources are readily available online with a quick Google search, Youtube videos and of course there's Discord (or any of the thousand similar apps lol).

TZ and the forums are pretty much a relic of a bygone era. Happy Anniversary TZ!

I don't know to be honest. I guess people value the live conversation over proper structure? Some Discords for some characters in SFV (same with other games I assume) are well organized, but sometimes you still need to browse hundreds of messages to find what was that nice tech that someone found.

I remember you and Fahad holding it down for a while.

Sad to see the state of the forums these days but I don't think forums are a relic of the past. Bring in a like button and make the Discord server link here and people might come. There's plenty forums I frequent that have been around just as long as TZ and still do fine.
