they are all 正's. only some of them are missing a few strokes. this, and why it is written all over mokujin, is because the character is widely used as tally marks in east asia.

and the reason why mokujin has tally marks on its back is because, i contemplate, moku was once a wooden dummy. many chinese martial art styles such as wing chun traditionally use wooden dummies for training. and it's a common practice to carve a tally mark on the back of the dummy at the end of every training session to record the progress.

it is a popular belief in east asia that if something soulless stays in touch with humans long enough, it may start to grow a human soul, gain the human shape, and behave like humans do. this might explain the existence of such a creature as mokujin and the fact that it mimics all kinds of martial arts to perfection.
